For those seeking a spiritual journey, the Gangotri and Yamunotri yatra by helicopter is a convenient and efficient option. These two destinations hold great significance in Hinduism, as they are the originating places of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. According to Hindu mythology, King Bhagirath performed penance at Gangotri, which led to the descent of the Ganga river on earth. Yamunotri is where pilgrims seek the blessings of Yamuna, the sister of Yama, the God of death.
The actual source of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake of ice and glacier, known as the Champasar Glacier or Yamunotri Glacier, located on the Kalind mountain at a height of 4421 meters above sea level. However, it is not easily accessible, so the shrine has been located at the foot of the hill. Pilgrims can offer pooja at the temple itself, as the approach to the actual source is extremely difficult.
If you’re looking to visit Gangotri, one of the main religious sites in the Do Dham pilgrimage circuit, there are a few ways to get there from Dehradun. One option is to take a helicopter ride, which offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Another option is to drive or take a bus, which takes about 8-9 hours. Once you arrive in Gangotri, be sure to visit the shrine and pay your respects to Goddess Ganga, the river that is so closely associated with this holy site.
